Pros

I worked at Vans for two years. The employee discount is great (50% off regular priced merchandise, 30% off proshop and clearance). . .and that was about it.

Cons

The management at my store's location was horrible. In the course of my time of employment, the store went through a dozen new managers. The atmosphere of the store was so negative because every single associate wanted to quit! The hours are the main reason I decided to leave. Most of the time associates get 4 to 8 hours per week, and sometimes you are not scheduled at all. I went to school from 9 in the morning to 9 at night and they would have me come in to do a floor set from 10 at night to 3 in the morning! The management is not willing to work around your school schedule and will schedule you when you have class, forcing you to find someone to cover your shift for their mistake (which no one will), leaving you with no hours for the week. Also their is little to no opportunity for growth in the company because the management has no clue about the company's policy and how to train associates for advancement. Don't look forward to moving up in this company because you won't! Especially in the district my store was in.

Pros

The environment is absolutely amazing with my coworkers and they are always supportive. Any issues that arise are met with a high level of humanity - on the base level of the people I work with, because I haven't really delt with corporate. It genuinely feels nice to work here when you have a team like mine. The culture of skating is absolutely amazing to learn about at VANs and be a part of as well. I like the history behind some of the shoes, but that's probably just because I'm a history nerd.

Cons

Part time doesn't get many hours or enough pay to survive off of. However, you can't become full time unless you get a higher position. Sadly, they are incredibly hard to get, due to the fact people seem to stay with VANs if they get that promotion, just because it seems to be great to work here once you have that higher position. As well as the usual shift is 4 hours, and sometimes you only get one shift a week. It's just incredibly hard to stay here when it can't even give you enough money on your paychecks to get a small amount of groceries that'll last one person two weeks.
