Pros

I decided I would never work for another Japanese company.

Cons

Toyota Tsusho is not a place for non-Japanese. This is true in Japan and in every country they operate. Non-Japanese employees are managed under what approaches a combination of a colonial/prison labor system. There is a Japanese old boys club culture that is ruled from the top down. If you speak Japanese but you are of non-ethnic pure/proper Japanese descent, you are simply not in the "club". The top management in the overseas offices are all Japanese nationals and speak Japanese to each other in front of their local office employees. Upon hiring, they promise salary earning potential that never results and you quickly realize your bonus will never happen. You will be expected to work very long hours and essentially be "on call" at their whim. I worked weekends and was also expected to travel on my weekends leaving little personal time. When traveling, it was sad to see the state of the US offices. Toyota Tsusho's management require absolute loyalty to the company. If they suspect an employee of any thoughts/action against their individual personal interests or goals, or you fail to "cooperate" in any way, the offending employee is essentially blacklisted. They will organize a campaign to find and fabricate offenses to use against the employee should they try and sue the company after they have been fired. A blacklisted employee's life will be made miserable in hopes they will just leave. Senior US managers are coerced into this system and expected to call each other out, report offenses, and collaborate to build a case against an unfortunate employee. Further, they will try to damage the offending employee's reputation to undermine their career prospects after they are fired. While this was not my fate, I was asked to review employees I did not know. Toyota Tsusho is a key contributor and part of Toyota. They are a trading company and enable Toyota to operate more smoothly around the world, solving any challenging material, technical, and logistic challenges Toyota may have -- at arms length.
