Pros

My review will pertain to present-day TCS-MIA (main location in Kendall), with just a few comments about the company as a whole. I had a dual role as a Custom Spaces designer and Inventory Specialist, also working closely with the (amazing!) Visual team, OPs and RSPs. Like most reviews on this site, the remarkable people I encountered were easily the best thing about my work at this company—the cream of the crop, honestly. TCS MIA is a store with a rare kind of camaraderie; collaboration is encouraged, and most everyone sincerely cares about the quality of their work. At the design desk, no one hesitates to ask one another questions or, when there is time, to brainstorm to find solutions. This generates an atmosphere customers want to be part of/feel included in. In true Miami style, the store runs on cafecita! - - also lots of laughter and encouragement. TCS is not a coast along kind of job; those who want to, tend to feel out of place. However there are lots of puzzle solving opportunities for the curious and service-minded. It can be an especially good place to work PT if you’re a student or have a second gig, as current management goes out of their way to accommodate requests. During a health crisis, my team’s support enabled me to keep working while getting back to a stronger place, and I’ve seen many such scenarios play out: team members treated as individuals with their own important personal goals and dynamic lives. Every job has aspects one would like to change, but on the whole I’m thankful for everything I learned in my 5 1/2 years with the company, and for the super smart and playful crew I had the enormous privilege of getting to know.

Cons

My time with company included dramatic highs and lows. An exceptional organizational boom was taken to be new normal, with buying choices that created an impression of TCS as impractical, rather than a place for accessible solutions. Currently, it’s not easy to progress in pay, nor for part-timers who would like to, to go full-time—with many factors contributing to that reality. Even so, I’m sad to now be leaving due to new policy regarding family members. It had been possible for family to report to different direct supervisors/work separate shifts, but the wording of that rule was recently adapted (separate from most recent handbook). The company loses someone with knowledge and experience at a time that’s even more needed. I would love to see the company get back to a strong place and once again be an example of vibrant employee culture, with steady merit increases, 401K matching, and bonuses even for part-timers, as was once the case. TCS customers have specialized questions and benefit greatly from expertise; seasoned TCS-ers set the tone and transmit the early vision. High standards make the job much more interesting.

Pros

The Container Store has the most thorough training process of any company I've worked for. The environment was nice, and my coworkers and managers were all great. The employee discount is significant.

Cons

I applied because I was not getting the hours I was promised by my other part-time retail job. During the hiring process, they said I could work as many hours as I wanted, up to 29 hours per week. They did not mention until I was hired and asking for my hours that hours are dependent on how many customers you get to sign up for the rewards program. As a cashier, everyone I checked out who was not a part of the rewards program and did not want to be counted against me. Customers who are already a part of it don't factor in. I could check out 40 people in a shift, only have 5 who weren't part of the program, and only get 2 of them to sign up, and I would be penalized for that with my hours. If you work floor shifts and sign people up on the floor, it's able to boost your score since you don't interact with non-rewards members who don't want to join the system at all, but I was never offered floor shifts. They expected a 60-70% conversion rate, which is not realistic. Most people who want to be part of the program already are, and those who aren't typically aren't willing to even hear your 20-second pitch about it.
