Tata Consultancy Services

Part of Tata Group

Is this your company?

It was good, not great, but then again, it depends on the team you work with. - Assistant Software Engineer (ASE) Tata Consultancy Services Employee Review

Pros

One of the first things that matter when you work in companies as large as TCS is "the team" you end up working with. If the team and project are good, it sets the tone for your overall experience with the company. Having said that, here are my few pros from working with TCS for 3 years (worked in two locations, Hyderabad & Bangalore) - * TCS is mindful of employee needs. For eg - when I had to relocate from Hyderabad to Bangalore, they did what was required to help me find a new project. That way, I would say they are family friendly. * If your supervisor/manager is good (if you are lucky) and you are fairly capable and good at what you do, chances for career progression are decent. You will have to work hard to get where you want to be. Career progression is a bit slow, but possible. * TCS training is one of the best, but everything good about the company stops with the training.

Cons

I list more cons than pros because my overall experience with the company was just ok. * The renumeration is far from the industry standard, probably at the lower end of the spectrum. * For one year I worked in a project where I put in almost 15 hours of work per day, sometimes sleeping in the office and waking up and working through the next day. Work-life balance was the last thing on my mind during this year. While I enjoyed the work, what irks me is the level of acknowledgement the team received for our work. * My two years in Hyderabad were mired with severe office politics. * The rating system through which employees are promoted or given a raise needs a much needed overhaul.

Pros

Large client base. Talented people, have "cracked the code" on offshoring development and support.

Cons

For anyone used to working in US-based firms, the culture and politics will be difficult to understand and navigate. Internal policies and systems focus on the offshore delivery center model. Roles in the US do not fit into that mold, and obtaining approvals for simple expenses can require weeks and insanely high approval chains given the size of TCS. I needed approval from a global division head (a CEO direct-report) just to pay for a short training course. Missions of different departments are not clearly defined, so overlap and conflict are common.
