Pros

Its a great place to work if you want to learn about financial products and retail banking. Training is on-going due to the ever changing landscape of financial services. You will meet and get to know many different types of consumers and you'll quickly become a part of the local society.

Cons

Slow internal progression process. There's a huge lack of diversity on a senior level. Your ideas and creative thinking will not be valued here. Too many gamers focussing on results instead ethics. Working with money makes you a target for fraudsters externally and internally. Santander do not trust their employees, even when they do a good job. Expect heavy audits and sting operations to see how you operate ethically. On the work front, you are micro-managed. Most employees, hardly take their lunch breaks due to the job threats and demands. Any additional hours are not paid as overtime. The pay here for what you do, is poor. In-house job satisfaction questionnaires are supposed to be anonymous, but staff are told that they can be identified. In my experience, trust was a major issue. Plenty of press around managers and senior staff plotting and stealing from customers. You need to keep your whits sharp.

Pros

Of all the companies I have worked for, Santander has had the strongest training program. The training was comprehensive, well-structured, and especially valuable for employees who are new to the banking industry. Additionally, Santander's ONE software is by far the most intuitive and user friendly banking platform I have used, making it easy to learn and navigate while supporting efficient daily operations.

Cons

Like most retail banking roles, there is a strong sales component. With fewer customers visiting branches due to online banking and ATMs, much of the day is spent making outbound calls to existing clients, trying to set appointments, and push products and services. While I understand the importance of sales in the industry, I personally felt there was significant pressure to prioritize sales goals over relationship building and client service, which I was not comfortable with.
