Pros

There are some truly wonderful people working in this organization; however, those who work the hardest and demonstrate the most dedication to the union's mission are most often overlooked and barred from opportunities for advancement.

Cons

On an inter-personal staffing level, there is an absolute acceptance from the human resource department and upper management for neglectful treatment of staff. Over the course of my last year of employment with SAG-AFTRA, several employees in my department (including myself) continually filed formal complaints about harassing behavior that affected our abilities to perform successful. While management and HR acknowledged the validity of the issues, the individual causing discomfort was never spoken to or removed from the organization. The actions of one individual caused my department to lose very talented employees in a matter of six months, and if HR doesn't catch onto trends such as that I don't know how much faith a new employee could put in the organization as a whole. From a purely professional standpoint, this is not a good environment to grow in. I went into this job looking for more experience, and felt that being ambitious in nature was almost looked down up. Management in my department limited opportunities for professional development, and continually promoted members of the team who were more willing to help maintain the status quo of doing as little as possible each and every day without detection from upper management. If you are lazy and just want a way to kill seven hours each day, SAG-AFTRA may be a perfect fit. However, do not expect any real development or professional opportunities during your tenure unless you consider learning how to look busy a marketable skill.

Pros

The mission is meaningful and the benefits package is cool

Cons

Work-life balance is poor. The workload and expectations feel consistently high, and coverage isn’t reliable, when things get busy, support can be inconsistent. The biggest issue is fairness: there’s a noticeable pay gap even within the same team for comparable work, and it’s hard not to feel discouraged when people doing the same job are compensated very differently. It also doesn’t feel like a true team. Accountability is uneven, and when some employees disengage or avoid work, the same few people end up carrying the load to keep everything running. Leadership responsiveness can be inconsistent, and representation and inclusion efforts don’t always feel reflected in decision-making.
