Pros

Flexibility, low stress, great PTO, opportunity to take as much initiative as I want, great proffessional development opportunties

Cons

Incredibly limited job mobility, pay significantly below market rate, no raises or very limited. No leverage either way: great employees are hardly compensated appropriately and slackers don't get addressed appropriately either.

Pros

Some really great professors with a lot of experience and connections to labs, industry, government, etc. Research is highly relevant and world-class.

Cons

Some professors can be quite toxic or over-demanding of their students. Would recommend thoroughly researching PIs before committing to one for masters or phd. Also, NCSU has notoriously bad upper-level management. Huge delays in the bureaucracy result in PIs missing out on million-dollar grants. Although the professors may care deeply for their students, the people above them don't care at all and have no interest in listening to professors or students about how to improve the school.
