Pros
it is alright if you don't like to work hard. If you put in a 40 hours per week at Merck you won't feel ripped off at the end of the year with your bonus and review.
Cons
For hard workers the pay and incentives are demotivating. If you work extremely hard, 50-60 hours per week you may be very dissapointed at the end of the year as your bonus and salary increase is only slightly higher than if you did not work hard. Also the company is aggressively outsourcing, so people in the twighlight of their careers may not want to move to Merck, for fear of being layed off.
