On ship you get free food, cabin and ability to visit ports. Shipboard life is fun with the atmosphere that can be described as 'family'. It is great when you go from ship to ship on various contracts, and see team members you have worked with prior. Its fun working with people from 55+ countries when you are on a contract.
Cons
Pay is rather low, and it takes 5 years to get vested in 401K. Health insurance is with Aetna - expensive in my opinion, about $200/month for single on premium plan. Had all sorts of trouble with Aetna not covering a lot of tests. You work every day about 10hours for the entire contract. Shoreside management makes decisions without really understanding shipboard issues.
