Pros

I worked at GDS for over 5 years though many changed in company structure and leadership. Overall, I had a positive experience up until my last year with them. Management had always been a mix of helpful and supportive with occasional micromanagement. They navigated the pandemic incredibly well by delivering virtual events in place of face to face and were able to make the switch quickly enabling client retention in a turbulent time. When events were live there were a lot of perks to working here, including getting to attend the events and meet incredible executives. That is no longer the case with virtual as you sit in the office for 12 hours 3 days in a row without a break and with a minuscule food allowance. However, GDS does pay very well for an events company and has a pretty generous leave policy. Culture wise, it is a mix. They have two staff appreciation events each year, one in the summer and one at Christmas. These are really fun events where you get to know everyone, and given how siloed the organistion is that is important for developing an interdepartmental connection.

Cons

Little to no upward mobility unless you are in sales or liked by middle management. People were regularly passed over for promotions because they were not friends with management. These people were never offered feedback on improvement or training. In fact, if you are not in sales you have no leadership training opportunities. This drives a huge rift between sales and support staff, creating resentment as support staff execute the events but sales were the only ones rewarded with lavish holidays. There are also gaps between senior leaders which is exacerbated by the three different office buildings the Bristol HQ is spread across. This leads to inconsistent messaging to staff around expectations as leaders will contradict each other. Presenteeism was also a huge issue. Events do take a lot of work to create and execute, however there were months at a time where we had no work to do and we’re expected to sit at our desks looking busy the whole time. This is really damaging for morale especially as employees want to work and provide value. Many staff members ended up burnt out. The company hires a lot of young staff looking for their first jobs. While that is a good thing as you get a good feel of corporate life and can learn a lot, these employees are very impressionable and middle management often encourages really unhealthy and harmful behaviours.

Thank you for your review, we really appreciate your candid feedback about your time with GDS. At the beginning of the year our CEO outlined GDS' 4.0 strategy and our ambition to build out our L&D initiatives across the whole business. Our new Global Head of Training and VP People are leading on this and will be sharing plans later in Q2. Please do reach out to me directly to discuss your thoughts and ideas on how we can best support you in the meantime, I would be very keen to catch up. feedback@gdsgroup.com Best.
