Pros

Consistent stable company vacation time, sick pay, pension for vested union members, 401k for all employees, employee stock purchase plan, stock options to salaried employees, annual performance evaluations, bonuses in some management positions. Major medical, dental, and vision. Life Insurance for salaried employees. regional favorite retailer with great stores and products modernized logistics and systems with continuous improvement private label brands in general merchandise and food keep business price competitive Company motto and goals are clear and achievable Stated goal is to make it a fun creative place to work and efforts are made in most business units to create that environment.

Cons

Work Life balance as a stated value. If you're management, you are expected to breath Fred Meyer. Some years there are no seasonal hires - get it done with the same staff and twice the volume of merchandise and customers in the store. Urban store conditions are a constant battle -- Customers abuse merchandise, restrooms, restaurant area, throw stuff on the floor, etc. Upper Management values cookie cutter approach to operations, personality of neighborhood or creativity in merchandising or product assortment is not highly valued.

Pros

Job can be fun and interesting Always something new to learn Lots of personal fulfillment as a manager when things go right

Cons

Unsupportive upper management Toxic work culture, unpaid overtime is rewarded and even expected or forced, even to the tune of multiple weeks in a row with no days off when you are salaried. They claim to support work life balance but even the smallest effort to set boundaries is heavily punished. Not paid as much as we should be for everything we have to do and deal with
