Pros

It's a job and a pay check. I like most of my co-workers and customers. Sometimes, my customers make me laugh or otherwise brighten my day.

Cons

According to DG, everything an employee does is considered stealing. Corporate thinks that most theft/shrink is caused by employees and ignores evidence of customers walking out with baskets of stolen merchandise. Managers are given an impossible task list with few labor hours to accomplish it. If freight stays in the stock room, then it is considered shrink. If an employee buys a drink in the store, keeps the receipt, but leaves the drink overnight and takes it the next day, that is considered stealing. It's as if the receipt becomes null and void after midnight. I must search my employees' bags (and they must search mine) and those of any vendors, but I cannot ask the same of a customer I actually suspect is stealing. It would not surprise me if they (anyone above my SM) would write me up/fire me for calling the cops on a shoplifter. Policies conflict and contradict each other. The left tentacle really does not know what the right tentacle is doing. For example, cashiers cannot move beyond a 30 ft radius from the register, but are expected to stock totes regardless of where that merchandise goes. Each day, I have to decide which policies to follow and which to break just so I can do my job. Nevermind that those who write these ridiculous policies most likely have never actually ran a store. DG is too concerned with opening new stores and too cheap to invest in current/older stores. We get counseled on not having the right merchandise fixtures, but are rebuffed when we try to order the correct ones. One of our A/C units is broken (and has been for at least 5 years), but the company/landlord won't fix it. However, all DG stores are uncomfortable in summer time. The company sets the A/C temp at 76 in the summer (and are proud of this!). That is sweltering here in the South. And they expect us to stand at the register without a drink close by because having a drink at the register could be employee theft (Seriously).

Pros

You have an opportunity to create good good relationships with your customers.

Cons

There is no work life balance. If you’re a store manager you’re expected to be there 24/7 if necessary. You’re also salary, so you’re paid for a flat 40 hours but required to schedule yourself for a minimum of 48 hours. No holiday pay, no overtime. You have access to two types of bonuses but they’re IF you qualify for them. You get little to no support from upper management and constantly told you’re not doing enough. They don’t care if you’re having staffing issues and still expect you to get the truck completely worked in 2 days and the store to be 100% recovered daily, even if you’re alone. Then they’ll either look for ways to write you up to terminate you or push you until you quit.
