Pros

Columbia has great benefits and time off. Very flexible and has great training opportunities. On the tech side going to conferences the prestiges value is extremely helpful. Great people and community to help with my skills. Free subscription resources to online materials like Lynda.com and digital books.

Cons

The pay at the university is less than businesses. Columbia has a sense of you should be honored to work here. The tech is not updated and many things are not current or state of the art. Budgets need to be kept to and do not change much year to year. All departments are not unified. This means every department and section of the main IT unit are separate. Working in a place where everything is seprate is hard and sometimes more costly since there is redundant contracts.

Pros

The benefits and work-life balance were generally reasonable.

Cons

The Internal Audit department was one of the most disappointing work environments I have experienced. Columbia promotes a culture of collaboration, trust, and support, but that was not reflected in my experience. Leadership micromanaged employees to an excessive degree, especially on work-from-home days. If you stepped away from your computer for a few minutes, it felt like you had to justify your whereabouts. Rather than encouraging employees to learn and grow, management often made people feel foolish for asking questions or not knowing something immediately. The atmosphere was stressful, morale was low, and trust between leadership and staff was virtually nonexistent. I would not recommend this department to anyone seeking a supportive or professional work environment.
