Bait-and-Switched after I was hired - Student IT Worker Columbia University Employee Review

Pros

I don't have anything positive to say.

Cons

CUIT initially told me that my work hours could be flexible. After I was hired, they told me they had a "sudden change" of plans, and I had to work a significantly increased number of hours a week, which became very difficult to manage with my schoolwork. CUIT had the audacity to fire me after telling me to come into work on a Saturday, when no one was in the office. I tried on multiple occasions to contact my supervisor, when, after a few hours of wasting my time, I finally got into contact with my supervisor only for him to tell me that no one was in the office in that day. I was fired a few days later. Yes, you read that correctly -- I was fired after CUIT wasted several hours of my time. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't the ideal employee and had my fair share of screwups, but I honestly had no reason to be an "ideal employee" given how deceptive CUIT was. In retrospect, I was happy to be fired from CUIT.

Pros

The benefits and work-life balance were generally reasonable.

Cons

The Internal Audit department was one of the most disappointing work environments I have experienced. Columbia promotes a culture of collaboration, trust, and support, but that was not reflected in my experience. Leadership micromanaged employees to an excessive degree, especially on work-from-home days. If you stepped away from your computer for a few minutes, it felt like you had to justify your whereabouts. Rather than encouraging employees to learn and grow, management often made people feel foolish for asking questions or not knowing something immediately. The atmosphere was stressful, morale was low, and trust between leadership and staff was virtually nonexistent. I would not recommend this department to anyone seeking a supportive or professional work environment.
