Pros

Columbia University is a diverse environment that stimulates learning, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment. As a support function, you're working behind the scenes to insure the professors and doctrs can concentrate on educating and changing the world. The benefits package is very extensive and Columbia subsidizes most of the cost. The greatest benefit is the ability to gain an Ivy League education at little to no cost to yourself.

Cons

There are times when Management is caught up in politics. Egos can be easily bruised, and it is wise to mind who you cross as that person will find a way to get back at you. People stay in their positions for years and feel a sense of entitlement. They withhold information because they think it will make them obsolete. It can be a long commute depending on where you live.

Pros

The benefits and work-life balance were generally reasonable.

Cons

The Internal Audit department was one of the most disappointing work environments I have experienced. Columbia promotes a culture of collaboration, trust, and support, but that was not reflected in my experience. Leadership micromanaged employees to an excessive degree, especially on work-from-home days. If you stepped away from your computer for a few minutes, it felt like you had to justify your whereabouts. Rather than encouraging employees to learn and grow, management often made people feel foolish for asking questions or not knowing something immediately. The atmosphere was stressful, morale was low, and trust between leadership and staff was virtually nonexistent. I would not recommend this department to anyone seeking a supportive or professional work environment.
