A bit above-average (3.5 stars actually but I can't rate that way) - Freelance English Tutor Cambly Employee Review

Pros

# Pay rates stay the same regardless of your origins and there is no "Native Speaker-ism" at the organisational level here. It all boils down to your English language and teaching ability. Pay @ USD 10 per hour (USD 12 for Cambly Kids) is OK--not too bad or good. Yes, I hear a lot of people cribbing but I've come across much lower pay rates than that. #Ease of entry. No pointless interviews and screening. Upload intro video (or maybe demo lesson for Cambly Kids), fill up a few details and then let them decide. Smart move. Lean and clever. # Flexibility. No minimum hours or fixed schedule requirements, but there does seem to be a maximum of around 10 hours per day. There are a few other rules around handling calls and reservations that could lead to you being banned from new students or On-demand Hours (Priority Hours) for 3 days in a row. #Freedom to choose teaching style and material.

Cons

# The system's a bit shoddy with lots of bugs that surface during peaks (weekends). # USD 10 per hour need not be your actual payout because sometimes there aren't enough students to ensure you get every hour filled up. # Rating system is too student-friendly and not transparent at all. Ratings are updated once a week (on Wednesday evenings or Thursdays depending on your time zone) and only the average rating is displayed, i.e. you can never know how a specific student rated you or what's goo/bad about you or the student. # Some students can be total @#@#@ for whatever reason but the problem is Cambly doesn't provide a way to filter them for goo. That's just too student-friendly.

Pros

Very flexible schedule (you create your own), can easily cancel classes without too much of a penalty (make every student that you like a "regular" student so that if you get penalized...only regulars can book you...you have a huge pool of regulars), Cambly provides lessons, you can use almost any website as long as you don't need to share login information, it's fun and easy, many students become like friends, you can learn about different countries, cultures, and languages

Cons

The pay. It has never increased in the 14 years that Cambly has been in business. They are starting to offer a new program called "Cambly Pro" where you can make $15 an hour, but you have to apply to be a tutor for it and you could be denied. You have to have a 99% rating for 3 months to even be considered. If, like me, you are open to all students (and not just your regular students that you have become friends with), your rating can vary widely. No matter how good of a tutor you are, you will not be everyone's cup of tea. Also, Cambly does not allow tutors to teach in some states in the U.S. due to labor laws.
