A decent job, but profits wont be good enough for growth in payment - First Assistant Manager Big 5 Sporting Goods Employee Review

Pros

Sporting merchandise can be enjoyable to work around, the discounts can be very decent on certain items, a lot of skills learned here are valuable for management and understanding business structure, and training seems to be pretty thorough.

Cons

Profits for the company are at a stand still at best, new stores opening don't necessarily create more company profits but just steal business from other big-5 stores which makes raises or any pay increases difficult to give to employees. the company has a high turnover rate because of the lack of solid pay increases also. Obviously, weekends and working all sorts of holidays is a con of retail as well. The lack of a decent internet lay out or any capabilities of ordering online severely hurts this business and at this point of time I would project a decline in revenues and overall company standing for the next 5-10 years. Should be a stable job and one that many could enjoy, but not really moving forward.

Pros

Most employees were really fun to work with, life/work balance was great, taught me good life skills, good first job for work experience.

Cons

Barely got scheduled (pretty sure my location was way over employed), occasional rude and entitled costumers (especially during the holidays), could get very slow and boring at times, sketchy area, overal, not a great job if you're looking for something that pays well.
