Pros

In the general assurance group, depending on which client you were on, you usually worked with very experiened managers and partners who willingly shared their knowledge with you. Most wilingly took time out to go over several topics and they made sure you undertsood.

Cons

Your work week is comparable to the big 4 but do not have a big 4 salary. They promote 'flexibility' in the workplace however they have demonstrated that they do not believe in it. They want you to work 7 days a week. Fine, you may ask to leave early on a Friday for something person,. but you WILL be making it up Sat & Sun. Several managers and partners do not even know what weekedn means as they are emailing you on Sunday and expect a response! Some will even call you on your cell phone on Sundays! Family- what is that ? They used to care about it and be flexible when you had something going on. Well NO more. It's all about how much blood they can draw out of you. For the women out there, do not think of being at BDO if you want to have a family. They have already layed off 3 women who were expecting/gave birth.

Pros

Not everyone will be your person, but the ones who are, you'll keep them for life. The intensity of the work forges real bonds. When you go through the grind together, those friendships/mentorship stick long after you've moved on. Same goes for upper management.

Cons

During busy season (approx Jan to April), 40 hours is a floor, not a ceiling, and that's pretty standard for firms of this type. On the consulting side, you're constantly juggling multiple clients with overlapping deadlines, so if time management isn't your strong suit, you'll feel it fast. Compensation is solidly middle-of-the-road; don't expect it to wow you.
