Pros

- First store I worked at, my colleagues were like a second family. There's generally a lot of comradery among stockroom staff. - Helping people out with problems and purchases can be fulfilling - In store Discount, but not much considering the overheads for products - Was offered plenty of extra hours to fill in for people. - Flexible hours depending on management

Cons

- Second store I worked at, treated like an outsider because I'm from a different part of the country and didn't participate or agree with bigoted/racist rhetoric from the staff - Constantly had to chase up managers for missing hours & incorrect pay - Not being correctly paid after closing time, despite the staff still working up to 40 mins after the doors have been shut. Not allowing staff to see thier own clock in/clock out records. - Minimum wage - Shifts began to be split into 2 separate shifts during the day, so that non managerial & part time employees wouldn't have paid breaks. Fortunately I left right after this. - Unless you have managerial skills, don't expect to progress or any kind of raise. You can put in huge amounts of effort and not get any recognition or rewards. Whats even more insulting is you could just put a mediocre amount of effort in and nothing would change, still get paid so there is no incentive in that regard. - Other experienced staff on minimum wage were dressing up like managers to deal with customers and do other work that only management should do. - Pressure to work fast and achieve unrealistic sales goals, which is most cases is completely out of our control. No amount of hard work will make people spend that much. - Christmas & Black Friday periods are a chaotic nightmare and is not worth double the pay. Rude and frantic customers. - Pressured to sell people credit cards & add ons, despite having major ethical problems with it. - Dangerously narrow stock shelving & general overcrowding of stock & storefront equipment - Encouraged to take on additional responsibilities and train temporary staff for zero reward. - Staff that have been there for a while can get away with doing next to nothing while you're constantly hounded. - Understaffed to the point of violating health regulations, eg 1 person working in the stockroom in the morning when there should always be 2 in case of an accident. - Overheated stock room because there is only one option, to heat the entire building.
