Pros

Coworkers. Most people are willing to help others in different teams and departments as needed. Good benefits. WQ department had a great supervisor.

Cons

Lab assistants do repetitive motion which can cause injury. Beware. Low pay. Learning different tests won't guarantee higher wages. Upper higher management has no clue what is going. Giving notices to employees who have worked there several years and are permanent on any day and escorting them out in the same day they are given their notice is extremely rude. This brings the morale down of all workers which leads to being less productive. Recruitment of new employers starts after busy season starts, and training is not as extensive as it should be. Lots of training as it is happening and lots of mistakes made by new employees due to lack of training.

Thank you for your comments and feedback about what it is like to work at ALS. Safety as a priority is a core value at ALS and something we take very seriously. As a result, we have a formalized Health & Safety program in place that not only meets but exceeds provincial H&S requirements. Our program includes job hazard analysis and hazard risk reporting, which all employees are encouraged to bring forward. All identified H&S risks, such as repetitive movements, are assessed and necessary controls (such as work hardening, job rotation, task variety, protective equipment etc…) are put in place in order to prevent the potential for injury. We have already reviewed the H&S risks associated with the Lab Assistant role; however, we will be sure to re-visit with the site to ensure all H&S practices are being observed. It is true that our business is seasonal in nature, which requires ramping up at the beginning of the season and flexing down at the end. We do our best to time recruiting new employees so they are adequately trained for the roles they will be performing. However, due to the volume of recruiting we conduct nationally and the speed at which the season ramps up, it doesn’t take long for hiring to coincide with the busy season. At the end of the season, our operations do flex down again and we absolutely recognize and empathize that this can be difficult time for all employees at the location, not just those directly impacted. As such, we take care to respect the different needs of the impacted employees, as well as the rest of the workgroup. In addition, we follow all legal privacy and confidentiality requirements. If employees would like say their good-byes, we encourage them to do so outside of working hours. Please be aware that ALS strives to be respectful and considerate of all employees; and ensure that all notice requirements are appropriately honoured when separations occurs. However, this information is required to be kept confidential. We sincerely appreciate your comments as they serve to remind us the sensitive nature surrounding staffing practices and to be continually mindful of the impact of these decisions on the employee group.

Pros

Pretty much veryone is on the spectrum, so not much small talk is expected, noise-cancelling headphones and fidget toys are the norm.

Cons

No pay increases. Like none. Ever.
