Pros

Ecolab really is the Chemical Expert when it comes to Laundry and Warewashing Systems. Chemical (Soap) Dispensing Equipment is always beyond what competitors have to offer and marketing materials are the absolute best you can get anywhere. The detergents I sold are usually Double in price from the competitors but the detergents were the best on the market so I found the chemicals very easy to sell. You can make money here if you take care of and serve your customers. I finished my last year at Ecolab at about $88,000 for the year - which isn't bad for a front line route salesperson.

Cons

The job is extremely painful with very long hours and you are bound by customer's calling in at anytime so it is very difficult to get rest. Taking care of your customers is very fun and rewarding but your manager can make your life very hard. If you get a bad boss then you will not like working here. If you have a great boss then you will be able to tolerate the long hours and thankless effort you put in. Either way, when you work at Ecolab you will work your tail off. You always here the motto: "Work Hard, Play Hard" ... but for Ecolab it is only "Work Hard, Work Hard and then Work Some More". The work/life balance is not there... when you take a vacation you are still responsible for doing 4 weeks of work in 3 weeks so when you leave you are so exhausted it is difficult to enjoy it. Ecolab is very painful and you will work very long hours with no additional pay. Lastly, ambition and creativity is not rewarded at Ecolab. Ecolab is not looking for your ideas at the Territory Manager level, they only want you to comply and do what they ask with no suggestions on how things could be better... "March on Soldier!" As a Five Year Anniversary Gift to myself, I turned in my 2 week notice." Best thing I could have done for myself and my marriage. I am grateful I don't work at Ecolab anymore.

My experience was in a rural territory in the United States so anything else i cant speak too. In my mind, this job just isn't worth it. in a rural territory you have 100's of customers, many of them very small, and your furthest customer may be 5 hrs away. There is always something breaking down and someone else needing your attention. You will ALWAYS feel behind. Anytime someone leaves the company from a neigboring territory you are pretty much forced to cover that territory until they get a new employee hired and trained..which in my experience can take anywhere from 5-12 months Your District manager may like you and you may like him. It doens't matter. His boss (the area manager) is the one you need to impress. this means when you do favors for your boss (like working other territories) at the expense of your own territory, you may be making your boss happy but the area manager will look at your numbers and assume your a slacker. In the core division, you will have to become an expert on Pools and spas, Commercial laundries, Dishmachines and automatic dish detergent dispensers, floor chemicalls, and housekeeping chemicals. As soon as you put that nice white coat on your customers will talk to you like your an expert but you won't be...in fact it will take at least a year to feel comfortable wth everything...and thats if your a motivated hard worker.

Pros

Some good benefits regarding Medical. Dental plan so so only 1200 a year. Provided with a vehicle and gas is on them. Provided uniforms and footwear. If you get a good supervisor, then you have opportunity to run almost all aspects of your business. Ecolab used to be a great place to work.

Cons

If you are salary plus commission, you are also consider to be exempt from laws governing overtime. They changed the compensation for Route Managers at the end of 2008 after the laws were changed regarding overtime and pay. If you work there prior to that, then Ecolab got away with not having to pay overtime for almost 6000 employees. They consider the Route managers as being outside sales people. Law exempts outside sales people for getting paid overtime. However, route managers really do not fall into the description of what an outside sales person does. If you sale over 50% of the time, contracts, services, products etc., and are not responsible also for the labor involved with the sales, then that is what constitutes being an outside sales person. However, route managers spend close to 75% of their time performing labor as a result of the sales and also regular job duties. These involve installations of any equipment, dishmachines, and chemical dispensers sold along with maintaining all of the equipment in your route. On call 24 hours a day and rotating weekend coverage. You are also tasked with storing all of there equipment, parts, organizing and the whole nine yards on your own dime. If you do a good job in that very exhausting all time consuming position you better come to love it because you will not get promoted. Management will keep you down. If you voice your complaints regarding time off or needing help you will eventually find yourself with a job. Ecolab puts TM's on a pedestal in regards to pay and job function. RM's bring in more revenue for the company overall but are underpaid and most definitely overworked. Even if you do get time to take your supposedly vacation, it is nearly impossible to get coverage for the time off. Do not expect that your work will get do while you are gone. You have to work twice as hard and twice as many hours the week before and the week after you return from vacation. The worst part about the job is you never know what your income will be year to year of month to month. There is an invisible salary cap. If your income starts to grow and you begin to think that you are doing fine financially, just wait it will not be long before they manipulate your territory in order to keep your salary down. Any kind of loss that is expected in the normal course of operating a business regarding non paid invoices, lost accounts, corporate discounts to customers come out of the salary of the route manager. If you have any kind of concern regarding any aspect of your employment, you can only discuss with you immediate supervisor. You have to take the work of your supervisor on everything regarding your employment. You cannot depend on another department anywhere in your location or in corporate headquarters to listen to or address your issues. Ecolab is all about making management very prosperous while the underlings will be struggling paycheck to paycheck. Look at the CEO Doug Bakers salary whom rakes in over 8 million dollars a year, not to mention stock options and bonuses. I could keep writing but I have other things to get done. I hope this helps someone else in trying to decide between Ecolab and whomever your next employer would be. .
