Just don't do it. Unless you're one of handful of obnoxious, smug suck ups who snag that rare promotion, rater jobs are simply not worth your time. Even scoring leaders still have to work many shifts where they too have to be mere scorers. Compensation for scorers for nearly all testing jobs is a lousy $15 an hour. Wages have not gone up in the twenty years I've worked for them. In fact, wags are often gleefully cut just because they feel like it. You may be paid more if your home state has a higher minimum wage. Think about that. In many states ETS scorers are minimum wage workers. Here's an organization devoted to the glorious notion that education is worthwhile and pays off financially. All of their jobs require at least a college degree. And here they are offering no more compensation than if you had not gone to college at all. You're supposed to spend years of your life studying hard. In turn ETS is prepared to offer you the same wages you would have earned had you not spent four years of your life earning that degree. Right now, ETS officials are asking scorers to put in a possible work schedule at least a month in advance. In turn, they've just announced a revolting new policy. Scorers will not be compensated if work is cancelled last minute nor will they be compensated if the work runs out during the shift. I work for two companies that offer these kinds of jobs: Pearson and ETS. Pearson offers many scorers raises after working a certain number of hours, decent hourly pay, bonuses for work well done, paid time off and lots of overtime if you want it when projects go on. They also provide raises based on years of service. Meanwhile ETS offers a demand for your time weeks in advanced, cancelled shifts without compensation, minimum wage work and pay cuts. ETS officials bizarrely do so on the grounds they are being competitive. If a private company in the same industry can behave decently and treat workers well, there's no reason this organization cannot do the same. They fail to do so only out of sheer malice and spite. Do not apply for scorer jobs here. Ever. ETS is a genuinely bad company run by truly awful people. They do not deserve applicants for scorer jobs. They certainly do not deserve any loyalty, respect or anything more than the most minimal effort from their existing scorer worker pool.
