Pros

- My coworkers are really nice - Customers can be really nice and tend to say how appreciative they are of our employees

Cons

- The pay for the amount of work they expect you to do - Stores are given 120 hrs a week to split between 8 people and the wonder why stock isn’t being pushed - Multiple times throughout the week, employees are forced to work ALONE for a solid 5-6 hrs. If you can’t get stock out, check out customers, and manager an entire store AT THE SAME TIME, you will get talked about and that your “a lazy worker” - The cameras NEVER work and they refuse to add any on the outside of the store (which is why we get robbed so much) - It’s so unsafe, I’ve had many dangerous and unsettling experiences at my workplace and I was told “it happens everywhere, your fine” by management - NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOU, it don’t matter how many years you been there, how hardworking you may be, the company does not care about you not one bit. Your literally just another clog in the money machine making sure they’re well fed while your overworked, overlooked, and miserable. - If you’re a manager? Forget ab it, your gonna basically LIVE at the store with no extra bonuses, acknowledgement, or anything, you’ll literally be a worker they can make do everything and then threaten you with losing your job if you don’t do it.. sounds fun right?

Would Never Reccomend

Pros

They are so desperate that I got hired less than a week after submitting my application and had my first shift not even a few days later. IF the self-checkout is fully operational (i.e. the machine can take card and cash) then its one less thing to worry about.

Cons

The pay is abysmal (at my location you get paid $10.50 /hr as a sales associate, which isn't great, but other locations have it WAY worse.) You will be with 1 other person (provided you're a sales associate) aka the keyholder. If you are a keyholder you will be alone if nobody can come in and help, and the hours are insane. I've not even worked for 3 months yet and I've seen 4 people get hired and quit. Our current staff is at ~5 workers including the Store Manager. You WILL get burnt out, especially if you're working 30-40 hours a week like I was. I've seen about half of my coworkers cry because of stress. When Fresh Truck gets here, it's like hell hath been unleashed onto our store for 3 hours as we try to man the front and get the perishables in. The machines like to go offline quite often and will need to be reset at LEAST 1x a week.

Horrible company to work for

Pros

You can choose your own work schedule, take any time off that you want, and can move up with the company fairly quick.

Cons

The pay is horrible for all of the duties they expect. You are alone in the store a lot of the time. If you aren’t buddies with the DM you won’t get higher positions. They allow managers to hire people in at higher pay than people that have worked there for years make. The yearly raises are a joke. As a Store Manager, you are required to work 6 days a week. Employees never get to enjoy their days off because they’re constantly getting called in to work. The company keeps adding more duties, while not increasing the hours allotted in your weekly schedule. Plus during the pandemic, while every essential employee company was paying their employees hazard pay or bonuses, Dollar General slapped their employees in the face with a joke of 1 bonus for about $200 the whole pandemic. ASM’s are required do the just as much work as the SM (if not more) but the SM is the only one who receives quarterly bonuses.
