Pros

Salaries are very high and consultants make a killing. Everything the firms do is done top-notch - catered dinners (with uniformed waiters); flat-screen jumbo TVs in the lunchrooms (on every floor); travel to awesome places for conferences, with lots of after-hours planned fun.

Cons

The firms will take over your life. Expectation of 7-day work weeks, conference calls on Sunday a norm (and they last for hours), mandatory to check email at least once an evening (and you will get 100+ emails a day) and daily over the weekend and holidays; "Crackberry" syndrome is the minimum. If you are not married with a stay-at-home spouse, or single with zero outside obligations, you will be seen as incapable of making the grade. I know two women who had to discuss the choice to have a baby with their bosses - in one case the woman had to give up the chance to make partner.

Pros

The clients were very interesting Made some great friends I was satisfied with my income

Cons

Bullying culture - time sheets, performance reviews, KPIs etc Employees who lack substance and know how to spin are promoted and paid more. Employees who are technically proficient are treated with disrespect. There is a push for work to go to Hydrabad in India with various centres in different states taking ownership to get the work out. This is at the expense of clients and the staff who care who are trying to sort out all the issues. It is not about what you know or do but who you know. Very poor payers - staff ratings and pay meetings are all about how little Deloitte pays. It is all about profit per unit - the management of provisions and write- offs to make partners look good in their pay review period - march to may - you try being there during this time and you will see how stressed partners are. The pressure comes from everywhere - especially from very highly paid partners who do not have client bases and have nothing else to do. The staff and partners use and micromanage Yammer (Deloitte Social Media) and Smartnet (Deloitte pipeline of new Work) to score brownie points. To all clients and staff - run for your life
