Good opportunities to learn and develop

Pros

Working for Covidien gave me a great opportunity to learn, pay is above average in general, great benefits. Pace is fast, the company is making a clear effort to diminish bureaucracy and create a company culture. High emphasis on work ethics. Procedures are well followed.

Cons

I worked in 2 different departments and the experience was totally different in each case. In the first department I had to put in a lot of overtime which was never approved, had a great deal of responsibility, my effort was not really appreciated. In the other department I was able to balance the professional with the personal life. It all depends who your manager is. The company works a little too much in silos for my taste, left hand doesn't know what right hand is doing. Just like in any big corporation, sometimes it's easy to end up feeling like a number, disposable.

Too much to do and not enough time or people to do it with.

Pros

Most of my coworkers were nice. Cafeterias in all 5 buildings served descent food at a good price. Campus and buildings are well maintained. Fitness center on-site.

Cons

They are currently in the process of what they refer to as "right sourcing" which is a clever way of terminating employees and transferring their jobs to contract employees in India while keeping this practice very secretive from the media. Training is practically nonexistent and you are expected to learn new technologies on your own time (I was a non-saleried employee and they wouldn't approve overtime). They load too way much work on you with sub-par compensation. They expect email to be answered on your time off/vacations. Too many meetings that can easily be eliminated in simple face-to-face interactions.
