Pros

The core purpose of City Year - working to support students who show signs of dropping out of high school - makes any of the struggles along the way worth it. As a City Year Corps Member, an employee work with students who show poor attendance, behavior issues, and low English and Math scores. The bonds you make with your students are powerful, and the little successes - for example, getting a kid who counts using his fingers to learn how to multiply and divide in his head - make up for the long hours.

Cons

Because the teams at each school are made up of 17-24 year olds, and because the emphasis is on the TEAM, expect to face some maturity and personality challenges. Corps Members who work at the high school level are also faced with a seemingly insurmountable task, as it is near impossible to get students caught up to their grade level over the course of just one year. Finally, the firm belief in giving people the opportunity to "grow" means that sometimes the people who are hired - including Program Managers - are people who may not be suited for the job and, unfortunately, may not be interested in changing.

It's hard to imagine working for a better organization

Pros

It's a really positive and team oriented culture, very supportive of people's personal and professional development. I've found many opportunities for leadership and growth, enjoyed my work and my team, and made some great friends along the way. The work is inspiring because the organization has a great mission that has become more focused over the years, and gradually the organization has become better run, better resourced, and more aligned overall. I have referred several friends to apply because I believe it's such a great place to work.

Cons

People put their all into the work which leaves little room for work life balance. There is some disconnect between staff at local sites versus HQ. Growth opportunities can be somewhat dependent on openings when other people leave, and although they try to reward hard workers with more responsibility, almost everyone is underpaid, typical of the nonprofit sector. The staff overall is young, which can be fun and energetic, but sometimes lacking in perspective.

Pros

Working with a team, learning and developing your strengths and weaknesses, huge leadership opprotunities and inspirational children.

Cons

Long hours, a lot of paperwork, little pay, and sometimes the situation seems hopeless. Fortunately, working with a team helps minimize the effects of the cons.
