Politics over performance, career advancement non-existant, top-heavy management

Pros

Co-workers were always great. Management left much to be desired. Some new technology explored but that depended on which group you worked in.

Cons

Advancement based on politics and not on performance. 5-10% of workforce routinely let go based on annual forced ranking (you ended up higher in ranking if you were friendlier with decision makers -- individual performance didn't matter). Managers never subjected (fired) based on the 5-10% ranking.

Deep managerial hierarchy. Lack of leadership and communication. Negative selection.

Good benefits - lots of meaningful work, very high quality engineers.

Cons

Becoming too large and high overhead - brings some of the usual slowness and some bonehead policies. Rating system is really negative with forced placement of people into "bottom 5%" for example (the old discredited GE system).
