Pros

- For someone interested in networking, security, and unified communications, Cisco is one of the better large companies to apply your skills - If you have the right position in the right BU/organization, you obviously can make a large impact, given Cisco's success in the marketplace - Overall, Cisco seems to have generally nice people - Certain items such as its core values (ethics, frugality) are pushed downward quite effectively - Cisco shines in sales and channels

Cons

- Cisco has a long way to go in terms of effective product delivery (including product management and engineering). Too often, it must acquire in order to enter new markets. - Product cycles are too long (1-2 yrs on average from concept to FCS) - Brain-drain (outward) - Too bureaucratic in terms of career growth, ownership of efforts, accountability - When one can get higher compensation, more responsibility/authority/accountability, better title at other technology companies, one has to wonder what true advantage there is to stay at Cisco - Too many "lifers" coasting

Pros

Pretty good IT system now I work in another IT company in Silicon Valley. Lots of on-line and in-person learning opportunities, the internal e-learning system make learning on technical and on-technical topics very easy. Also relatively easy moving from one group to the other, with no upside. I like John Chambers will meet with employees every month whose birthday falls into the month. Also he meet with new hires very regularly. Cisco shows consciousness on getting green and help the community. They have an extensive outreach program in which lots of volunteer opportunities are posted, encouraged and participated. Good job in there.

Cons

Only lateral movement moving from one group to the other, absolutely ridiculous policy. there should be really an incentive for people to move from one position to the other. I did an prestigious MBA program, then when I finish, there is absolutely no upside to move within Cisco. The HR did not find an easy way for me to find a new and exciting opportunity. So I left. Also, the salary review process. It really depends on your manager. If your manager likes you, you can get lots of money. If you are not the favorite, then you are out of luck.
