Pros

If you are looking for a stable, comfortable job that offers an excellent work/life balance, then you should strongly consider working at Ciso. The benefits are also excellent. It's a great place to work at while you focus on raising your family or completing an advanced degree.

Cons

You may get bored with the repetitive, highly specialized tasks and start to feel like a cog in a wheel over time. You will definitely not be paid as much as peers at other companies...there is a cost to all those wonderful benefits. At the middle management level, there are lots of office politics that can really be a drag to endure. The pace of change is also ridiculously slow.

Pros

* interesting work if you choose to look for it. The base code has evolved over the last twenty+ years. * great people * telecommuting * reasonable pay and benefits * work / life balance * both public and monetary recognition for a job well done

Cons

The same problems one finds everywhere: * politics politics politics * Promotion is often based on cliques. * Far too many middle managers. * no management consistency -- one manager will allow telecommuting, another will not. * the company is no longer a startup, and new technologies are purchased, not developed in house

Pros

Cisco is stable, a fun place to work, and you can make of it what you will. I have been with the company for 10+ years and it's still a place I (usually) enjoy going every morning. When I wanted more responsibility, I just did it. In my experience you don't need to ask, just do it. Cisco encourages risk-taking, but if you're not a risk-taker, you'll do fine. Just do your job well. Free soda, popcorn, 4 wks vacation, generous compensation, and a company that is growing are all reasons Cisco is a great place to work.

Cons

Cisco's history of decentralization makes it hard to get the entire company to move in one direction. It can be hard to get cross-functional jobs done and it's not uncommon to discover other groups are doing a similar thing as you!
