Pros

The culture at CarMax is great. Everyone from the CEO to managers seems to truly care about employee wellbeing. People are casual but professional, and I have never encountered any hostility or unpleasantness from anyone.

Cons

The salaries just aren't competitive for the technology industry. I know plenty of people who have the same job title, same responsibilities, and do the same work as I do, but make 20-30% more. I, and many other software engineers I've spoken to, are considering leaving CarMax purely for the salary, even though we love the company.

Competitive salary, good bonus structure, amazing culture, progressive company values - This company truly cares about its employees, and I’m generally a skeptic about how any business/corporation views it’s employees. I was here before/during the pandemic and the company had to furlough large portions of the staff - but still ensured everyone had fully paid medical coverage during their furlough. Once the business recovered, they quickly brought back as many employees as they could. I wasn’t furloughed - but the way they handled this tough situation just shows to me it’s not just lip service when they say the most important assets they have are their employees. Once you’re hired, they are committed to keeping you - even if you want to retrain/change job roles.

Cons

Honestly, I love working here and if the day ever comes, I will have a hard time finding another place to work that I enjoy as much. I have tried to recruit as many friends/family to work here as I can.
