Pros
Depending on who you report to, the work-life balance at CarMax can be excellent. The company offers strong benefits, especially for vision and dental coverage. Medical (PPO) is on the pricier side, but still more affordable than what many smaller companies offer.
CarMax promotes “unlimited” time off, but in reality, it’s recently been capped at around four weeks. Last year, certain associates in the TA team had time-off requests denied, yet the leadership refused to give a clear limit on how much time was actually allowed. My advice: keep track of your own time off and always submit requests well in advance, especially around the holidays. The unlimited policy is still useful for unexpected emergencies.
They also offer “Rest and Learn” days, which are a great way to recharge. For home-office associates, the 6% 401(k) match is one of the best perks, it’s very generous, so I’d highly recommend taking full advantage of it.
There are also various perks and discounts available through the benefits page. However, be prepared to do your own research, as onboarding does a poor job of thoroughly explaining all the options.
Cons
Career growth is possible, but primarily if you relocate to the Home Office or hybrid in Richmond. Many associates hired remotely during COVID have little to no advancement opportunities unless they relocate. Pay is good but bonuses are scarce. If you get a bonus, it’s not great. TA as a whole is starting to move towards a micro managing style.
