Pros

If you are a Finance professional, Capital One offers a chance to work on really exciting and cutting edge projects, enabling quite a bit of professional growth. This is a great place to work for someone who is passionate about what they do and wants to make a difference. COF's benefits are also another great reason to work here. COF offers 3-4 weeks of vacation, depending upon tenure (5 yrs is 4 weeks) and offers the ability to purchase an extra week. COF offers Domestic Partner benefits, 401k matchings, Health & Dependent Care savings accounts (w/ matching). COF offers a free health clinic in it's building for associates and their families, too.

Cons

This is not a company where one can rest on his laurels. The bonus and merit increases are based on performance rating, and performance ratings are determined in a bell-curve distribution. It's possible to work really hard, but not get an "Exceptional" rating because others have produced even greater results. Also, "influencing" is a highly-valued skill-set here, so one must constantly network and build consensus in order to push their ideas. This is great for someone that has the natural ability, but if not, then it takes a lot of work to get good at this. And it's important to get good at this because COF pays for performance. Lastly, career advancement in the form of promotions has slowed down at COF, so make sure that you're happy at the level you come in at as you cannot bank on getting promoted within the first year or two.

Pros

Capital One might not be the biggest name in financial services, but that only makes it somewhat more willing to try new things and step out of the box a little more often than some of its competitors. Most decisions are made with a good deal of analysis and information about the market, which makes shots in the dark few and far between. You're surrounded by smart people. Not only are other analysts capable, but so is most of management, having risen through the ranks themselves. This helps give the impression that there is upward mobility within the company and gives associates something to strive for.

Cons

Capital One has re-orgs on a fairly regular basis. It takes a while to fully understand what your new role is inside the company, and sometimes by the time you get settled and understand the different aspects of your new job, you've changed roles again. Rapid changes to your managers might also prove to be a hindrance to getting promoted - if your new manager hasn't worked with you in the past, it feels fairly hard to get recognized - I have had very competent coworkers who have been in this situation. Lastly, you are surrounded by smart people, and you are often second guessed by your management - but that serves to keep you on your toes and to produce airtight arguments.

Pros

Flexibility of working on your own time as long as you get the job done. Community service - we do great things in the community. Great people to work with.

Cons

Don't influence enough of the decisions to be made. Human Resources and hiring leave a bad taste in my mouth. Not all departments allow associates flexibility in working on community service endeavors. Not a lot of consistency among depts and job families. Poor leveling for admin role.
