Pros

decent vacation time, retirement plan, and flexibility

Cons

BU is prone to hiring freezes, layoffs and budget cuts. A lot of talk about diversity but very few people of color in middle and lower management

Pros

- Discounts on T pass / BlueBikes, discounted tuition - Due to bare bones staffing, you can have the opportunity to take on large-scale projects far above your pay grade / title, which will help you find your next job!

Cons

Where to begin? - BU expects loyalty but does not reward or incentive high performers. If you are full-time staff, expect to do the work of 1.5 - 2 people and be paid below average for the Boston area. - Expect to do your job with bare bones resources, including staff. Numerous offices / programs are laughably understaffed for a university of 34,000 students. - Many managers lack the proper training to be effective leaders and to efficiently run their departments. One toxic manager in particular led to 4 people in a related department quitting in 24 months, further undermining staff morale and organizational integrity. - In my particular department, a combination of toxic management, poor pay, and unrewarding and unrecognized work led to 50% of our office staff leaving the university within 10 months. Truly one of the worst professional environments I have ever been in, and it devolved very shortly within a year after talented staff began leaving. Management was completely clueless and refused to act on staff concerns, leading to more people leaving (including myself).

Pros

Good vacation time, tuition remission is good but not what it could be

Cons

Tuition remission: the only school in the area who doesn't qualify your degree as necessary for your job, so you still pay heavily in taxes Politics and bureaucracies basically stunt any potential growth. And become emotionally draining - leads to a lot of discontent and turnover.
