Chaotic company with indecisive leadership

Pros

Benefits (summer Fridays, health+dental, PTO)

Cons

Utterly disorganized company full of silos. Frequently engineered urgency due to lack of planning and forward thinking. Managers aren't doing any actual managing. Communication is an alien concept to Biogen leadership. When someone leaves (and currently everyone who can, does leave), their work just gets reassigned to someone else. Stingy with pay and promotions.

Pros

Lots of excitement for potential new therapy Alzheimer’s Disease. Smart colleagues. Rich neuroscience pipeline. Decent compensation, although 2% annual salary increases do not keep up with the high cost of living in the Boston area.

Cons

Annual company “confidential” survey is a farce. One of the survey questions asks if you fear retaliation from your manager for your answers on the survey...speaks volumes about serious problems with your corporate culture and the quality and ethics of your leaders and managers. Survey results rarely lead to substantive changes that make employees lives easier and reduce bureaucracy to get work done. HR is completely ineffective and add to the toxicity of the culture. Lack of confidentiality and transparency are routine. Favoritism not expertise and results are the ticket to advancement. Senior Executive team lacks cohesion and a shared vision for Biogen. They do not act as a high functioning team because are so busy protecting themselves from the wrath of the CEO. The Company Quarterly Meetings are awkward. They feel forced and inauthentic.

R&D

Pros

Cutting-edge science, talented employees with a can-do attitude, confidence to challenge the status quo to work on difficult and complex problems in neuroscience ( a field that a lot of pharma/company's R&D departments have exited entirely); very competitive compensation and benefits; every day is a new challenge (for better or for worse)

Cons

Politics, cronyism, and favoritism reign supreme. In R&D, there are high experienced, competent employees that are not fairly compensated relative to other employees' background and minimal experience levels. It comes down to who your hiring manager was and his/her judgment in making hiring decisions. Sometimes poor decisions get made, causing loyal, hardworking employees to feel resentment to those less experienced ones (but higher up on the career level), leaving a culture with an extremely low morale, bitter resentment, and nasty gossip. Everyone in my group has talked trash about everyone else in my group, and this is not a secret to anyone. It truly epitomizes the worst toxic corporate environment.
