Pros

Decent salary Super Low Stress Nice Office

Cons

The company is an absolute disaster with no real plan. The retail side of the business is always in talks to be sold so the company can focus on the worthless crypto side. The company is hemoraging money so they, logically, decided to set up shop in Seattle to pay Seattle salaries on engineers. Of course, there's no plan to do anything with the engineers it's just a bunch of managers going on a drunken hiring spree in order to increase the size of their empire so they can continue to keep their own jobs as the eventual cuts happen. Layoffs happen all the time and the work is completely useless. If you really don't care about what you do, can afford to be laid off for a while when the cuts eventually come, and just want a paycheck; this place isn't too bad. Just show up and do the minimum because it just doesn't matter.

Pros

Awesome gym Cool greenhouse that grows some of the food for the cafeteria Monthly events with beer and snacks during lunch hours Some smart people to work with Lot of room for improvement and opportunity

Cons

There has been a major change in leadership recently, and the result have been very chaotic. Lots of moving and sharing of leadership resources has left teams in a difficult position. Image being on a ship with no captain, and trying to figure out where the ship is headed. Then, when the ship is pointed in the right direction, a captain comes along, reorients the ship, and then leaves. This can make it difficult for the crew to help get the ship where it needs to go. Recently there have been bi-weekly hour-long, mandatory, "customer love" meetings, which includes all of the developers at overstock. There seems to be little of value that comes out of these meetings, and at their worst have been 30+ minutes of talking about leaderships recent promotions. As an organization, Overstock has been very meeting heavy lately. This has increased greatly since the shift in leadership. There is little cost associated with the number of attendees, and what they could be achieving if they were enabled to work. There is also prevalence of excessive and inefficient communication. The result of all of this is that as a developer you'll be spending less than 50% of your time coding, and the rest of the time trying to cope with your surroundings. Also, a lot of the senior development staff has recently been poached by T-Zero and Medici, two other branches under Overstock's ownership. This has had a serious effect on the morale of some throughout the organization. It's not great feeling like you didn't get picked for the cool-kid club.

Pros

Nice building with a lot of great features.

Cons

Terrible communication. I was hired on and worked there for 6 DAYS when they randomly decided I was no longer a "good fit" because I didn't know an Excel formula (EVEN THOUGH I TOLD THEM I DIDN'T KNOW ANY EXCEL FORMULAS IN MY INTERVIEW) - told them I was a fast learner & very tech savvy and would have no issues picking up on it. I learned the formula in just a few days. I was the one that took the initiative to receive feedback and was reassured that I was doing great. I had every reason to believe everything was going well, when one day I was pulled into an office by the manager and let go because I wasn't "doing well enough." After being let go, I found out that they hired someone for that position internally. I wish if I wasn't doing well enough they would have reached out to me and set a goal or at least make me aware that there was something I needed to improve on. It makes no sense that I was let go without any communication. I guess Overstock is notorious for being very disorganization, making random layoffs (just read some of the other reviews) and lacking in communication, so be cautious.

Thank you for your review. We were able to investigate this incident and it appears that some basic skills required for the job were either misrepresented or misunderstood during the interview process. We are working on improving our skillset screening processes in place so that we can avoid these types of mistakes in the future. It could have saved both you and Overstock time and energy.
