      Pros

      Your job will always be safe, regardless of competence. This allows time for an individual to learn the position and pick up some extra skills.

      Cons

      Vastly different promoting schemes depending on the group (API vs. development) and manager. Overall disconnect between upper/middle management and on the floor personnel. As mentioned elsewhere, groups (development, API, Manufacturing Sciences) and unit operations (upstream, downstream) are in silos and are never aware of what the other is doing or capable of.
