Do not value employees

Pros

The benefits are decent and lower-level staff are extremely skilled and talented.

Cons

While the firm has forward thinking core values, I found that in the day-to-day work, the partners in advisory do not actually follow them. I’ve seen blatant sexism and nepotism and indirect racism. It seems like upper leadership is just an old school “old boys club.” The culture at the firm does not value its employees. They treat people like they are a replaceable cog and they would definitely choose to pay someone less to do your job. At the beginning of the pandemic, advisory was laying people off but claiming it was performance. Which in it of itself is questionable in terms of ethics. One team lost only women and over half were women of color. I would not recommend anyone work here and I would specifically tell women to avoid the firm.

Pros

If you ever want a professional work environment, DO NOT GO THERE!

Cons

Having worked here in the past 2 years has been my worst nightmare. There is no fairness in how employees' performance is evaluated. You ended up with no recognition in your contribution at all, although you handled insane amount of workload, difficult clients and complex situations. I have seen how high-performance employees were driven out of the office because they get blamed for "working too hard" or "helping other employees too much". I have seen people who get promotion into management without qualifying as a Canadian CPAs. I have seen staff taking leaves after they are booked on engagements and still able to get away with it. I have seen managers disappearing on tight deadlines, leaving the staff struggling on files and still getting away with it. I have seen high-performance employees been driven to work restlessly and NOT getting promotion because according to the partners, they “worked too hard”. They proclaimed work-life balance. But a better question is who is getting the work life balance? Their favourable babies who get time to rest and promotion with easy effort; or the hardworking ones who spent 70 hours per week, fixing the issue in those high-risk files and getting no recognition? In the mid year, I came to a senior manager with my concern on favouritism. He told me that I should do self-reflect thinking why I am not the one being favoured for? Guess what, this senior manager also left them in the same year. I guess he found out that he was also not favoured for here. I discussed with staff about favouritism, everyone told me to shut up because it is a taboo here. It is happening, but everyone is too scared to talk about it. I even got threatened that if I brought this issue to HR, I would be forced to submit my letter of resignation. Personally, I really regretted working for this office and I know I am not the only one.

Pros

- A lot of knowledge and experience in different industry you can gain - Good teamwork and bonding (if you are lucky to join a great team) - A stepping stone to jump commercial

Cons

- Company bond of 1.5 years - Laptop bond of 3 years, with mark up very high price - Slim bonus, the cut off date (Sep) and payoff date (Mar next year) are unfair - Management won't care about your heavy work load, keep delegating works and all must be met the deadline - Appraisal system is fail and unfair
