Great colleagues in engineering but career progression almost impossible

Talented developers. Opportunity to work on some very high profile and highly-visited web apps.

Cons

Very little chance of career progression in the engineering teams. I've watched some of the very best developers in the industry have to fight inordinately hard for modest promotions. It seems management will only award a promotion or pay rise after seeing a job offer from another company. It doesn't help that objectives are not set properly and there is no feedback loop or adequate appraisal mechanisms.

There are lots of opportunities to try different role's and work in various channels in a large business like Argos

Cons

Poor work/life balance, uncertainty of restructuring due to Sainsbury's merger. There is a lack of encouragement for internal development across the boarder business, this is very inconsistent and entirely depends on your functions leadership team.
