      Too many VPs, Work organization not direct. No one responsible.

      Pros

      Good bunch of people. Can do attitude. All work hard to get the job done.

      Cons

      Very high stress. No straight line organization for decision making. Too many matrix levels. Too many VPs, all want to manage, but no one wants to be responsible. When good news comes, VPs waits in line to take turn in gloating. When bad news comes, they all points fingers at each other or just MIA. Decisions are made at levels too high, due to lack of direct responsibilities, to actually see whats going on at the front line.

      Pros

      Having access to the technology at amat is a wonderful thing.

      Cons

      amat continues to take away things like the car allowance, and overtime for anything over 8 hours a day. This would have been fine, except these were some of the things promised when I took the job years ago.

      Telecommuting support is nice, but company direction changes frequently.

      Pros

      Applied has a strong telecommuting culture. While this can allow for greater schedule flexibility, they tend to expect more work from you (e.g. 60 hrs+ a week).

      Cons

      The management is reactionary. The direction constantly changes. While the senior leadership lays out some good ideas for the future, there is a "don't rock the boat" culture which makes it difficult to work in an evolutionary fashion. It is not uncommon to work nights and weekends to accommodate last minute changes. Some efforts are undertaken strictly for how they "look" to senior management (knowing full well that the activity won't materially help our customers/company).
