Pros

Smart, collaborative team. Strong senior hires in past 6-12 months. Mission is not just lip service, and the team it attracts reflects that. Addresses a true gap in the market, and if it disappeared tomorrow will have bettered the world - this is not true of the vast majority of companies. Willing to make large changes to adjust to market demands. Middle and upper management has strong African and female representation. Well-funded.

Cons

Not all teams and locations are as well-supported or have strong leaders. Change management and communication is inconsistent. Executive leadership includes few Africans.

I worked at Andela (core team, not client teams) for a few years. I loved it, and it was human. After the new CTO came in, the company changed a lot. The engineering team suffered 2 consecutive layoffs, some left on their own accord due to how the new CTO works. The worst part was that for almost a year, the new CTO held meetings to calm things down, making false promises in order to keep the team engaged and doing the work while he restructured the sector. Shortly before Christmas, he fired an entire team, the same team that had promised that a layoff wouldn't happen. A person who hasn't learned to play fair.
