Pros

Largest relief agency in America with $billions of assets. Humanitarian motivation among many volunteers. Political, logistical and financial support from DOD, FEMA, White House, and some major corporations.

Cons

Lack of leadership, management skills, vision, humanitarian focus. Evidence of long-term patterns of malfeasance, discrimination and even corruption. Lack of recourse within organization to employees who protest, wish to resolve problems or seek redress. Deep structural cronyism. Punitive conduct towards those who ask questions or urge reform. Institutional arrogance and inertia. Open exploitation of donors and volunteers with false promises and platitudes. Misallocation of donor monies and volunteer time. Lack of respect for donor and volunteer privacy and confidentiality. Repeated violations of key federal and state regulations. Expensive use of PR to stifle criticism and dodge accountability. Leadership tends to be politically partisan and from right of the political spectrum.

Pros

The mission is great -- collecting blood to be used to help ill or injured people is noble. Preparing for and responding to disasters, locally and nationally, is necessary and provides a lot of joy and satisfaction to people who really need the assistance.

Cons

The Human Resources leadership at the national headquarters is poor. The SVP is a lawyer who has no prior direct HR experience and the VP for Biomedical Services HR is a former Training and Education/OD consultant with no other HR experience. Between the two of them, HR is in chaos. Employee morale is low, turnover is high and employee recognition and work life balance is bad.

Pros

You are generally doing work to help people in genuine need. Many clients and volunteers recognize and are truly thankful for your time, effort, concern and dedication. You are put at the forefront of a crisis and are afforded the opportunity to affect change.

Cons

Always on call, unqualified and incompetent volunteer leadership. Many volunteers are granted a leadership or other critical position based on tenure or ability to contribute financially and not according to their leadership or management ability.
