Pros

Helping others through education and increasing blood donations. The ARC has many different divisions SAF (Service of Armed Forces, Biomedical, Disaster Relief, etc). The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Cons

There is no 40 hour work week. It is 60+ hours, if you're lucky. Account Managers are the only employees held financially accountable for achieving goals. You can work 70 hours and receive only 40 hours pay and bust your butt, but if the collections staff doesn't like you (which they won't due to poor management) you will NEVER achieve your goals. Collections staff can shut down blood drives, defer your donors, all the while getting paid to make your life miserable. There should be some type of personality testing to "weed" out the negative people who thrive on hurting others. Some of the people in charge here only want to see others fail. Kind of crazy considering what a great organization the ARC is and how many different ways the ARC impacts people globally. Very sad and disheartening knowing that upper level management wants to blame one side (donor recruitment) and praise the other (collections). Absolutely bewildering!!! You give and give and give, and they take and take and take.

Pros

My direct superviser is great, so I'm shielded from a lot of the stuff that goes on around us.

Cons

Management applies policies when and how they choose. One manager makes employees take 15 minutes of PTO if they are late for work, even if they not only make it up at the end of the day, but stay hours over to get work done. And this is in a position requiring a bachelor's degree and is an exempt position. I've never been in another salaried position where I've been so babysat. Too top heavy with nothing constructive for the high paid execs to do. New policy, we can only take our PTO as it's accrued, it's not credited to us at the beginning of the year like it was before. Our sick time is wrapped up in our PTO, so don't get sick at the beginning of the year, you'll be off without pay.. But , how is it legal that I can work for 42 hours, and still have to take PTO because I had a doctors appointment? So, it should look like I have 45 hours in, 42 worked, and 3 stolen from me to make my 40?? They make exempt employees keep the time cards we approve every two weeks at Monday through Friday 9-5 regardless of what we really work. We wouldn't get overtime because we are exempt, but they also shouldn't be taking our PTO when we put in 40 hours of work.

Pros

The People that are left after this last lay-off are amazing to work with.

Cons

Upper Management is out for filling there own pockets and could care less about anyone else. I would not donate to them or Volunteer. Always lay-offs.. Long term employees are gone at the blink of an eye. You can be the perfect employee for years, then when it comes time to lay you off.... They find something to make you feel horrible. The help they give people is very limited. Maybe 1 night in a hotel and maybe $40 in clothing if needed. It is pretty bad. Of course they may feed, but only a minimum amount. They are waiting for another huge disaster so they can hire more people besides the Gift Planners, then lay them off when possible. It is awful what they do. For a non-profit, they could care less about anything.
