Pros

Helping save lives and working with great employees and volunteers.

Cons

Move to fictionalized model has created consistent lay-offs and low employee morale. Complete lack of clear direction during change.

Pros

Working in the blood collections division of the American Red Cross is beneficial for someone that is trying to get started in the medical field of phlebotomy. It is always fun to go to new places and meet new people everyday. I think it creates good karma: helping people help others.

Cons

Working for a non-for-profit, the salary is awful. Your schedule must be very flexible, as well, with long hours (usually over 10 hours) and overnight stays out of town. There are no blood donation centers in Texas so everyday consists of loading, unloading, setting up an entire mobile blood drive, tearing it down, loading, unloading again.

Pros

Very dedicated co-workers, opportunity to help patients and donors.

Cons

Absolutely demoralizing. I have been here almost 10 years and my self worth as an employee is entirely gone. We have been told we are replaceable and should be very lucky we have a job regularly. When I started, the Red Cross was a great place to work but that's no longer the case. The building is in disrepair and the only time you see a manager is to be yelled at, given bad news or given the work of another employee who quit or has been laid off. I work very hard, have never been in trouble and have always gotten excellent performance reviews. None of that matters. Also, the benefits are horrific. If you get sick, good luck with the insurance plan...
