      Pros

      You work hard but the people are smart and they are committed to what they are doing. It's great to work with a fun group of intelligent people that are continually innovating and improving.

      Cons

      In some ways it's still a company that is growing up and evolving and that can be frustrated at times because it's old enough to have structure and some bureaucracy but not so old that it has everything worked out yet. (Like a teenager.) Most people I know have a love - hate relationship with their jobs.

      Pros

      Great place to learn the fundamentals of highly distributed/scalable transaction oriented development. Must be young, hungry and kid-free to fully appreciate the experience, it's fast and furious.

      Cons

      You work very hard, not so bad unless you like to see your kids. The fact that the developers often become first level support for mission critical services, yes this means you will often carry a pager that will wake you at 3 in the morning because a server in Japan is performing aberrantly. There is this aura of thrift that after while creeps darkly into your morale, notably the "horse stall" like offices. It literally seems to be modeled after a warehouse-based sweatshop, right down to the "desk doors". It goes without saying these people are not great followers of Feng Shui.

      Pros

      Working at Amazon is technically challenging. Amazon has a very high bar for its employees which results in a company of smart and dedicated people. It is a great place to learn and provides lots of opportunity for growth both in terms of technical skills and in terms of job opportunities. It is very easy to get information about what other teams/groups/departments are doing.

      Cons

      Work and life balance are hard to maintain at Amazon. Amazon can, and will, suck up all of your time if you let it. Some development teams are heavily burdened by on-call support. One of Amazon's core values is frugality which results in less than optimal health benefits.
