Not What it Used to Be

Pros

Alcon is still a good company to work for as far as health insurance and benefits go. I would no longer consider it a long term career choice like it used to be, but it can still be a fantastic stepping stone for career development or addition to the resume.

Cons

Has really gone downhill for over the past few years. It's definitely not the great company it used to be. The company used to feel like one big family, but has changed into a very typical corporate America cliche environment. The level of job security has decreased dramatically in many departments and will probably continue down that path for the next few years.

Pros

Good benefits. High sales and corporate turnover rates lead to opportunities within.

Cons

While some change can be good, too much change, turnover & loss of continuity have made this company nearly dysfunctional and inefficient. New upper management does not listen to expert advice of employees who have the knowledge and background necessary. The number of people who know the business is declining and having negative effects when upper management has a consulting style approach to reorganization. Many bad or carelesss decisions are made.

Pros

Some of the people are wonderful. Benefits are decent. Good way to enter the pharma/medical device industry.

Cons

More work is always being forced upon employees without management providing resources. 12 hour shifts can be challenging when everyone expects you to work for free as an exempt employee on your off days. Almost no one respects night shift schedule and expects night shift employees to be present at meetings throughout the day.
