Pros

You will make great friends, because you bond as you navigate the awful environment.

Cons

This company does not care about your emotional or physical well being. After leaving Academy, I was able to discontinue all emotional support medications and love a healthier and happier life. Example - the corporate office was 2.5 weeks behind the rest of the city of Houston with letting their employees work remotely. And then less than three weeks later, furloughed most of them. So are they essential or not? No considerations for those giving 110%. Be ready to play “the game” if you want to stay employed.

Pros

Worked with some good people over my time there. Old regime really cared about people and the team really worked well from top to bottom. Hard work can lead to promotions.

Cons

New management came in post KKR purchase and began to have layoffs every 6 months or so - 100 employees here, 75 employees there. Morale is the worst I've seen - always waiting for the next shoe to drop and corporate employees are abandoning the company - even good employees are actively looking for new jobs. Great company culture that was built over decades was thrown aside and employees that were around before the transition are viewed as a "threat" to the new way of business.

Pros

8-5 mentality for most employees

Cons

Office morale is at all time low and new management team cleaning house didn't help much. Everything looking forward is turning Academy into Wal-Mart. Academy used to be a family owned company and that showed in how the employees were treated. No one in the buying office is happy anymore. It has taken a turn for the worst. You have a few key leaders who are running the show but not paying attention to the people it takes to get the job done.
