Pros

-multiple missions: in a few years, you can develop a very nice portfolio of skills -Alten's size makes it present in all big companies -being a contractor in a company offers oftently plenty of advantages (focus only only on the job, and really interesting IT projects are more and more taken care by contractors only) -when you start to be bored, your mission usually ends

Cons

-depending on the contract, being a contractor may make you a second-class employee -be careful of staying too long on the same mission, otherwise, all advantages disappear -often get satisfaction with your management only through force (e.g., nobody will listen to you unless you are at the start of a mission) -no training (or useless and cheap one)

Pros

Not many... not to say none No matter what you'll hear from the manager trying to hire you, don't believe it. Promises are never followed up by facts.

Cons

This company has very low reputation among IT engineers, which is truely deserved. Customers don't trust this company either. Once I asked a customer: "Why do you work with this company?" His answer: "I have no choice. It happens that some others are worse."

Pros

ALTEN has been around for about 20 years so they have impressive exposure to most sectors. I'm in the telecoms division and there are quite a lot of opportunities, and they keep getting interesting projects. The projects themselves are also of great quality so it's technically rewarding to work on such projects when you are working on-site for the client. The managers also keep track of your evolution and are there when you need them on anything. The annual career-management is also well lead and the process is in place to ensure that things go well over a period of 5 years.

Cons

The flip-side of being at ALTEN is that because of their size, financial compensation is quite poor. I have seen some extremely competent (and experienced) engineers paid quite poorly compared to what they should be getting. There is also little to no reward if you do extra hours at a client's site or if you deliver more than the client expected, which is morally damaging.
