Hard Work with Little Personal Time

Pros

Large and mostly friendly team Close to a train station Good initial support, but dwindles without pressure on management, often little time for training and additional roles. Some apprenticeships available

Cons

Work load is never below "high" and is often downright chaotic, the lab is seemingly constantly playing catch up and it's difficult to know why, when everyone works 12 hours shifts and occasional weekends. Pay is low, no real benefits aside from a savings scheme. Staff turnover is high Staff mentality can be somewhat selfish, everything is someone else's fault. The company seems to be constantly chasing money and clients, but monthly results are always average/poor.

Pros

dont need any qualifications or experience as company doesn't give a damn about the accuracy of results.

Cons

Very much quantity rather than quality. The standard practice is to hire three new staff, see which one works the fastest, then sack the other two. Quite often only a weeks probation period is given to new staff, and if they can't keep up with the ludicrous pace, they get sacked. The speed at which one is expected to work, and the number of food samples tested mean that microbiological techniques are not followed correctly, and staff don't even wear gloves or store food samples properly. (No wonder that use by dates are so inaccurate.)
