I was questioned about my math ability and how to explain such things as,"Why is the answer to a negative number times a positive number always a negative number?" I answered, "Multiplication is really a short cut for addition so that, for example , 4 x -3 = -12 because 4 x -3 means add -3 to itself 4 times, i.e., 4 x -3 = -3 + -3 + -3 +-3 = -12
