      Field Engineer Interview

      Jul 2, 2012
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 3 days. I interviewed at SLB in Apr 2011

      Interview

I think there is normally a phone interview or campus interview involved as a first step. I interviewed as a candidate for the Tech and Field program, which basically means that I already got an offer to be a mechanical engineer, but then had to go through the field interviews as well in order to see if I would get into the T&F program. For those who don't know what T&F is, it's a program that Schlumberger REMS offers to I think about 5% of their new hires, and it means that you defer your entry into REMS to go to work as a Field Engineer for 18 months. This is a great way to get some hands on exerience (and you also make more money while you do it so even if you hate the field at least you can save up for that BMW for when you go back to Houston) Anyway, once we got on location for the interviews (Midland, TX), we had various rounds of group interviews with the candidates divided into teams. Each team was given a segment to research briefly and present on, and you were also paired up with someone before the interview to prepare a joint in-depth interview on a company segment. The teams were also challenged to build a tower each out of sticks, tape and sheets of paper, which had to hold as many full cans of coca cola as possible. This was mostly to see how well the candidates worked in teams. We went out to a wellsite one day, and visited various segments' workshops to see what each segment is all about, and during this tour the interviewers would randomly ask people questions like: Can you identify the centrifugal pump on this unit? Which one is the suction and which is the discharge end? Stuff to see if we had good common sense when it comes to machines mostly. At the end of the three days we had 1 on 1 interviews, but I got the feeling that the decisions had been mostly made by then. My individual interview lasted about 15 minutes as I recall, and it was mostly questions about where I would like to work and what segments interested me.

      Question 1

Point at the centrifugal pump. What are the suction and discharge ends of a centrifugal pump? How can you tell?

      Interview

It was an on campus hiring. First they shortlisted based on CV. Then second round was group discussion where we were given abstract topics like "Half filled glass of water" and were asked to discuss. This was also an eliminatory round. The final round was more of a HR round, they asked behavioural questions, few puzzles (very easy) and general knowledge questions

      Question 1

You have a candle, a lamp and you have to light both, which will you light first?
